Atlético have rebuilt their press — and it starts with the full-backs

The most surprising tactical revival of the season is happening in Madrid’s second club.

For a decade, Atlético Madrid’s identity was a low block and a counter. This season they press higher than any side in La Liga except Barcelona, and the rebuild started in the least glamorous position on the pitch.

Both full-backs now position themselves as first-line forwards in possession and first-line defenders out of it. The wide areas where Atlético used to absorb pressure have become the zones where they create it.

The midfield three benefits most. With the flanks compressed, opposition build-up funnels into central traps that have produced a league-high eleven goals from turnovers.

Rivals have noticed. Two visiting managers this month abandoned their planned shape after twenty minutes. The low block is not gone; it has simply moved twenty metres up the pitch.
